Bel got his first deep wood when he tripped over the rocks when he escaped to play outside one noon. Usually, nothing can hurt him but that time he was under the sun and being reckless, he saw his blood for the first time. He screamed in panic. He did not have the concept of red blood or the pain of having a wound until that time. His father broke out from his deep meditation to heed the screams of his little boy.“Listen to me and listen to me very well. The sun is not our friend nor our foe, but it will not look after us, nor it means to harm us. This is nature, Bel. You have to be careful under the sun. You are not strong when you are under the light of the sun. This happens to your body.”The wound was patched and it healed. Instead of a dark scar, there were lines of golden skin over where his wound was on his knee. His father showed him his golden scars too. All under his nagagi. Kanako Yoshida passed away after the next spring. He left his foreign Pride husband, Bartholomew Crane, and his six-year-old son, Belpheghor Crane. Bartholomew buried him in their yard, where it was near where he and their son lived. The Human became ill a year after giving birth to Bel. Ever since then, they retreated to the mountains of Hokkaido instead of the village area.To raise Belpheghor, Bartholomew worked in a shipyard as a shipwright. Here, he made friends with Kazuo Taoka. The man knew about Bartholomew's son in the mountains but wondered how the friend went back and forth from the mountains and the shipyard. Kazuo Taoka discovered that his friend became something similar to an oni (demon) with his large bat-like wings and curved, tall horns that Kazuo only saw in the paintings. Bartholomew used his power of flight to be able to go to work. It was a day job, so he was as strong as the next person. He was often lethargic too when he over exerted.Kazuo confronted Bartholomew about it. Bartholomew explained his situation and species, and told the Human about his son in the mountain. Kazuo, loyal to the brotherhood he had formed with Bartholomew, promised to guard his friend’s secret with his life. He even met Belpheghor when Bartholomew carried him, and they flew to the Pride’s home.ACT III
Kazuo Taoka moved to Kobe and invited the Cranes to come with him. However, Kazuo was imprisoned for or murder from 1937. Bel was only 15 at the time. With the situation being tight in their general economic status, Bartholomew suggested that they should start a full-fledged port cargo handling business when Kazuo regained freedom. Bel was 18 when Kazuo assumed the kumicho title in 山口組, Yamaguchi-gumi.In Kazuo Taoka’s time as a boss, Bartholomew and Belpheghor were the hidden swords of the group. It gave an easier way for Kazuo to expand the Yamaguchi-gumi from a small strikebreaking gang on the Kobe docks to the world's largest criminal syndicate, with over 10,000 members during its peak. Since the father and son Pride could only function better at night, little to no one knew about them, and those they visited never met the following daylight.Even through the changes of the kumicho, the Cranes stayed in the shadows, supporting the Yakuza group. The two were fabled as 悪魔の鶴の鳥 (Akuma no tsuru no tori) or Devil’s Crane Bird and only the kumicho’s known them.However, Bartholomew detected an imminent danger for him and his son. It was something the older Pride knew that the current kumicho was planning carefully.In 2002, on his father’s orders, Belphegor attended the Metropolitan Police Academy (警視庁警察学校, Keishicho Keisatsudai gakkō). Bel had no idea why all of a sudden his father sent him there, but he obeyed. Strings were plucked, books were opened or ripped so that Bel could attend the academy despite his massive crane irezumi on his shoulders, arms, buttocks, and under thighs.What Bartholomew anticipated happened. Their existence threatened the current leadership. A month after Bel’s completion of his training course, a fully armored gang rained in their home at noon. The father and son fought, but the sun was not on their side. Bel and his father were inflicted with wounds and bled, but they strategically used their rock ability and eventually rose victors in a mountain of bodies, just in time for dusk. The Cranes knew they could no longer serve the group nor stay around, so they flew out of the country and landed in Korea. Belpheghor used his international name instead of Riu Kintsugi when he pursued his education in Korea but still in the same area.By the time that Bartholomew saw that his son no longer needed him or his protection, he told him that he missed Kanako. Belpheghor knew that there was not a day that his father did not miss his mother. He just did not expect that from his father’s solemn words of “I miss her so much, I wonder if I would see her in my deep sleep now” would mean something deeper. His father went into a deep sleep and never woke up. Bartholomew Crane became a statue cradling his wife’s kimono in his arms.
